PRICING

What drives the cost.

How costs add up

DigitalOcean

App Platform has a free static-site tier and paid application containers starting at $5/month for its smallest shared-CPU size. A container price is not the total price of an application with workers and a database.

  • Add up container sizes and instance counts for every service and worker, then include databases and other cloud services.
  • Check outbound transfer allowances and the scaling options supported by the selected component and instance type.

Adios

Apps must fit within plan resources. The free workspace supports development and previews with your own AI provider key; production apps require a paid plan. Include external services in your estimate.

Plans and allowances ↗

For a web app plus a background worker and a production database, write down all three components before comparing totals. A free static site, a $5 container, and an Adios production plan represent different amounts of infrastructure.

A CLOSER LOOK

Technical details & migration.

Choose the DigitalOcean product first

DigitalOcean

App Platform manages application builds and deployments. Droplets and Kubernetes expose different infrastructure choices, while managed databases and object storage are separate products. Those options should not be treated as one identical hosting service.

Adios

Adios centers the product on a coding workspace, application runtime, and service templates. Its manifest specifies how a project builds and runs. That is a closer workflow comparison to managed application hosting than to administering a virtual machine.

Adios documentation ↗

If you need VM-level control or an existing Kubernetes operating model, evaluate those DigitalOcean products directly. A comparison of App Platform features cannot settle that decision.

Development tools versus deployment components

DigitalOcean

App Platform deploys source repositories or container images and supports several component types, including web services and workers. You bring the code and configure how those components build, run, and scale.

Adios

Adios includes a workspace for editing source, working with AI, running commands, and inspecting a preview before deployment. Teams can also keep a local development loop and use the CLI. The practical difference is where the implementation work happens.

Adios documentation ↗

A team satisfied with its editor and delivery pipeline may primarily need hosting. A team seeking a shared place for coding, preview, and runtime investigation should evaluate the workspace experience as well.

Where persistent application state lives

DigitalOcean

App Platform's local filesystem is ephemeral and does not support persistent volumes. Writes can be lost when containers are replaced. Persistent records and uploads need a suitable database or object storage service instead.

Adios

Adios offers database and queue templates that can be connected to application services through the manifest. You still need to design where state lives, how it is backed up, and how a restore is verified; successful deployment is not a backup strategy.

Adios documentation ↗

Inspect file writes before moving an app in either direction. Uploaded images, generated reports, caches, and database files have different durability needs and should not all be treated as temporary files.

Which fits my project?

A team already operating on DigitalOcean

Consider App Platform

Existing cloud services and operational practices may make App Platform a convenient deployment target. Include the value of those integrations when evaluating a move.

A team seeking shared development and hosting

Consider Adios

If the need includes AI-assisted implementation, source review, previews, and release inspection in one product, evaluate Adios's workspace alongside its hosting capabilities.

A workload that needs a virtual machine

Compare infrastructure products

OS-level customization or a particular orchestration setup changes the scope. Compare DigitalOcean Droplets or Kubernetes with your actual runtime requirements rather than extrapolating from App Platform.

Moving from DigitalOcean to Adios

These steps apply to an App Platform application. A move from Droplets or Kubernetes needs an additional inventory of machine or cluster responsibilities.

  1. Record the app's component contract

Inventory source revisions or images, build and run commands, routes, ports, health checks, environment variables, worker components, and scaling assumptions.

  2. Separate compute from stored data

Locate database records, object-storage buckets, uploaded files, and external APIs. Decide which DigitalOcean services remain connected and which data needs a tested export and restore.

  3. Recreate and validate the application

Configure Adios manifests and secrets. Test routing, background work, uploads, database access, authentication callbacks, and health checks with representative traffic.

  4. Cut over domains and background processing

Coordinate the final data sync and worker activation so jobs are not processed twice. Update domains, inspect errors and latency, and retain the previous setup until the move is verified.

Suggested steps, not an automatic importer. Rehearse before changing production.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

A few useful answers.

Does this compare Adios with all of DigitalOcean?

No. The detailed hosting comparison focuses on App Platform. Droplets, Kubernetes, managed databases, and other DigitalOcean products have their own capabilities and operating responsibilities. The page calls out that wider portfolio where it affects the choice.

Can App Platform keep uploaded files on local disk?

Its local filesystem is ephemeral and persistent volumes are not supported. Store uploads and other durable application state in an appropriate external service, such as object storage or a database, instead of relying on container-local files.

Is the $5 App Platform container comparable to a complete Adios plan?

Not by headline price alone. Compare the service and worker instances, database, storage, traffic, development tooling, and AI usage required for the same application. App Platform's smallest container is one compute component, not a bundled description of every dependency.
